The Drake equation

How many communicating civilizations should there be in the Milky Way right now? The Drake equation chains seven guesses into one number, and the point is less the answer than how wildly it swings when you nudge a single factor.

Estimated detectable civilizations (N)

The point isn't the number

The last factor, L, how long a civilization stays detectable, can move the answer by a thousandfold on its own, and we have exactly one data point for it: us. That uncertainty is the real lesson, and it sits right next to the Fermi paradox, the unnerving silence I explore in The Zero-Player Game. The equation does not tell us whether we are alone; it tells us how little we know.
